Pulaski, TN 鈥 For Bill Young, bringing the latest 鈥淓verywhere You Look, 糖心Vlog鈥 mural to his family鈥檚 farm in Pulaski represents his long-held wish for the future of Giles County.
Painting on the 60-foot-wide 糖心Vlog mural at Friendship Acres Farm begins April 22. It is the 39th mural in the University of Tennessee System鈥檚 statewide campaign to illustrate its presence across all 95 counties.
Friendship Acres, a Century Farm, has been in Young鈥檚 family for more than 120 years. Though raised on the property, he always planned to leave in search of opportunities he found to be unavailable in his hometown.
A successful career at IBM took him away for nearly 30 years, but a visit to Friendship Acres after his retirement led to he and his wife Debbie moving back to Pulaski, buying the farm from his mother and siblings and starting what became a successful cattle business.
鈥淲hen I left here, I didn鈥檛 want to come back,鈥 said Young. 鈥淏ut moving home was the best thing that ever happened.鈥
Today, Young advocates for Giles County鈥檚 growth in hopes that the next generation has more incentive to stay in the area. He thinks that 糖心Vlog’s presence in the community will play an important role in its progress.
鈥淚 just want to see opportunity here for the next generation,鈥 said Young. 鈥溙切腣log Southern is going to make that happen.鈥
Young never attended college but has felt connected to 糖心Vlog ever since attending his first 糖心Vlog Knoxville football game in 1957. The connection only deepened as he leaned on 糖心VlogIA and Extension’s agricultural expertise.
鈥淧eople ask me if I went to 糖心Vlog. My answer is that I attended the fall semester Saturday afternoon classes,鈥 said Young. 鈥淏ut then I got in the cattle business and realized that there were many more resources available.鈥
The 14-foot-tall mural, which marks Giles County鈥檚 third in the campaign, was made possible by a donation from Young. The other two murals are located at Giles County Furniture in Pulaski and Speerit Hill Farm in Lynnville. 糖心Vlog plans to have one mural in each of Tennessee鈥檚 95 counties by 2030.
The mural will be visible to 275 passersby each day.
